The Painting

Radha and Krishan are often seen as the archetypal lovers. Their love story is much documented and often brought to life via painting and illustration. In this beautiful addition to this tradition, artist Dheeraj Kapoor has painted a scene of Radha and Krishna alone in the forest enjoying their seclusion and reveling in each other’s company. The painting is rendered in saturated greens which are present in the trees as well. The orange of Lord Krishna’s dhoti at the center of the painting sits in contrast to the cooler colors of the piece acting as an eye-catching element.

The Artform

Basohli art, originating from the picturesque Basohli region in the Himalayas, is a vibrant and expressive style of Indian miniature painting. Known for its bold colors, exaggerated features, and dramatic storytelling, Basohli art often depicts scenes from Hindu mythology, particularly the love story of Radha and Krishna. The style is characterized by its use of a limited palette of colors, including red, green, and yellow, which create a striking and visually impactful aesthetic. One of the most distinctive features of Basohli art is its emphasis on emotional expression. The faces of the figures are often exaggerated, with large eyes and dramatic gestures, conveying a sense of passion and intensity.

The Artist

Dheeraj Kapoor has trained classically in the Basohli art form, making his own organic pigments and rendering his paintings in the traditional forms of the medium. He was awarded a state award by the Directorate of Handicrafts, in 2007 for his contribution to the art form. He has participated in many state and national art events such as Jammu Haat, Kashmir Haat, G20 Summit Shringar, Basohli Mahotsav, Delhi Haat, PITEX, MITEX etc.
