The Painting

Mughal miniatures are often associated with royalty, not only for their ability to depict likenesses but also the gravitas that they gave the figures. In this instance Riyaz Uddin has rendered a simple portrait of a man in simplistic detail. While the finery that is often included in such portraits is missing the focus is given instead to the expression that the figure has. Gestures were carefully chosen, a raised hand signifying command while a thoughtful gaze might suggest contemplation. The borders of the painting seem to fade as if poorly defined giving the piece an air of incompleteness which further enhance the stark beauty of the work.

In the world of Mughal miniatures, portraits weren't just likenesses; they were carefully crafted narratives. Emperors, adorned in rich fabrics and jewels, were depicted with both majesty and grace. Artists employed meticulous detail, rendering intricate patterns on clothing and capturing the glint of jewels with precision. Gestures were carefully chosen, a raised hand signifying command while a thoughtful gaze might suggest contemplation. These weren't just portraits; they were visual narratives, portraying the emperors as ideal rulers and solidifying their position at the heart of the Mughal empire.

The Artist

"Born and raised in the pink city of Rajasthan, Jaipur, Riyazuddin started painting at the age of fourteen having been influenced by his father Abdul Shakoor. During his early years Riyazuddin was surrounded by architecture, and influenced by centuries of history, seeing colors which were made from natural stones and antique knowledge passed on by his father. So it is of no surprise that influence undeniably found its way in his work. Being trained under the watchful eye of his father, he grew an inclination towards the Indian school of paintings, specifically the Rajput Painting school under which he got more inclined towards the Pahari Paintings, the influence of which is visible in each brushstroke. In 1988 he started his own studio, converting western paintings of Tarot cards to Indian miniature in 1993. Which gave birth to a style which was completely juxtaposed to his earlier style of work but without any hesitation he went on to incorporate a new surreal element that has become a signature element in his work. "
