The Painting

This intricate Pattachitra artwork, hand painted by Gitanjali Das, depicts the story of Ramayana through inner and outer panels arranged in a manner of a scroll. The central frame inside the inner panel shows Rama-Sita during their exile in the forest with the foreshadowing figure of the deer in the foreground. This central frame is surrounded by several small circular panels with Lakshman and Hanuman painted inside them. The other eight rectangular frames portray the scenes that occurred during their exile, beginning with their arrival till the kidnapping of Sita by Ravan. The outer panel consists of twenty-one small, circular frames depicting various scenes from the tale of Ramayana. The artist has used naturally occurring pigments on cotton cloth. Each figure has minute details which illustrate the various iconography of their character. Thus, configuring the nature of Pattachitra paintings as a medium of visual storytelling.

The Artform

Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum and chalk.

The Artist

Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das had begun learning the art form of Pattachitra since the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learnt the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband who was also a fellow Pattachitra artist.
