The Painting
Mughal miniatures weren't just bustling courts or regal portraits; they bloomed with vibrant botanical symbolism. In this stunning tribute to nature’s beauty master painter Mohan Prajapati paints a stunning flower composition of delicate pink blossoms against an almost untouched background. Only a sliver of color can be seen bleeding from the top of the composition, hinting at an unseen sky.
The Artform
"Rajasthani painting, an exquisite style of miniature art, blossomed primarily within the independent Hindu realms of Rajasthan in western India during the span of the 16th to 19th centuries. Rooted in Western Indian manuscript illustrations, this art form underwent a transformative journey, influenced by the Mughal aesthetic in its later stages of development. Distinguished by its distinct attributes, Rajasthani painting stands apart from Mughal painting—both from the imperial studios in Delhi and the provincial courts. It boldly embraces vibrant hues, along with an abstract and stylized portrayal of the human form, complemented by ornate renditions of landscapes. Reflecting the burgeoning wave of devotional fervour within Hinduism, these miniatures predominantly narrate the enchanting tales of Lord Krishna, and his beloved companion, Radha. While also incorporating scenes from India's epic narratives, musical modes (Ragamalas), and depictions of heroines (Nayikas), the 18th century introduced courtly portraits, court scenarios, and hunting scenes into the repertoire. Distinct schools have emerged based on style, including Mewar, Bundi (and its adjacent Kotah), Kishangarh, Bikaner, Jaipur, and Marwar, and even extending beyond the boundaries of Rajasthan to encompass Malwa painting, also known as Central Indian painting. "
The Artist
"Born in 1974, Mohan Prajapati hails from Rajasthan and is celebrated for his mastery of miniature paintings—a cherished tradition passed down through generations. Under the expert tutelage of his father, he honed his skills in the tradition of Mughal and Kishangarh Miniature styles. He breathes life into his creations, often portraying captivating scenes from Hindu mythology, deities, historical events, and epic tales. Infused with unwavering attention to detail, his art unfurls the intricate feathers of birds and the delicate eyelashes of humans—each element a testament to his artistic finesse. Embodying a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, Mohan's quest led him to also embrace the enchanting Mysore and Tanjore styles of painting, in addition to exploring Ivory carving and creating realistic academic artworks. Recognizing the need to preserve and propagate the legacy of Miniature painting, Mohan Prajapati ardently strives to raise awareness and appreciation for this timeless art form. He has conducted various workshops across the nation, from Bengaluru and Kochi to Delhi and Madurai. His works have been displayed on platforms such as the Craft Museum in Delhi (2008), China (2014), the Craft Council of Tamil Nadu (2016), the FMG Institute in Noida (2012, 2013, 2014), and the esteemed NIFT Bangalore (2016, 2017). Recipient of the esteemed National Award in 2017 and State Award in 2004-05, Mohan Prajapati's artistic journey reverberates with a profound dedication to preserving India's cultural heritage and bridging the past with the present.
