The Painting

As one of the foremost devotees of Lord Krishna, Meera Bai faced many challenges in her life. She was often ridiculed and assassination attempts were made against her, however she was able to bare these indignities due to her staunch belief in her God. In this beautiful testament to her devotion, Avinash Karn captures Meera Bai lost in her love for Krishna. While there are plots occurring around her, she ignores them while repeating a mantra praising Lord Krishna.

The Artform

Emerging from the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani painting has roots that trace back thousands of years, believed to have originated during the time of the Ramayana. This traditional art form captures the cultural essence of rural India and celebrates themes of mythology, nature, and social life. Unlike the intricate detailing of Mughal art, Madhubani adopts a folk style characterized by bold geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and symbolic motifs. With a natural color palette derived from organic sources, these paintings are created on walls, cloth, and paper, often portraying deities, flora, fauna, and community rituals. Its unique flat compositions and intricate linework reflect a profound connection between art and the cultural heritage of its creators.

The Artist

"Avinash Karn (b. 1990, Ranti Village, Madhubani, Bihar) is a contemporary Mithila artist celebrated for redefining Madhubani painting through innovative techniques and modern themes. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in this art form, Karn developed his skills early and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) from Banaras Hindu University in 2014. Over the years, he has actively contributed to the evolution of Madhubani painting, receiving the Ministry of Culture’s prestigious scholarship (2014–2016) to further his practice. His work has been showcased internationally, including the Fumetto Comic Festival in Switzerland, exhibitions in Korea, the USA, and leading venues in India such as the India Art Fair and Bikaner House. Karn’s art bridges the traditional with the contemporary, addressing themes like social justice, urbanization, and communal harmony while retaining the intricate patterns and symbolism characteristic of Mithila art. Alongside creating, he is deeply invested in community outreach, leading workshops and projects such as AKSA, which empowers underprivileged girls through art. Currently based in Ranti, Karn works from his studio, Studio ArtBole, engaging with commissioned projects and continuing to expand the narrative of Mithila art on the global stage."
