The artwork offer a fascinating window into 19th-century Bengali culture. While devotional depictions of Hindu deities like Kali and Shiva were common, the genre evolved to reflect contemporary life. However, another deity which was given great reverence in this form is that of the Goddess Durga. In this painting, Durga is depicted surrounded by her family of Gods and Goddesses. She towers over the composition with her ten outstretched arms carrying her traditional weaponry.
This project is a collaboration of Bridge Bharat with Carpet Couture. Here we bring forth the two mediums to create a unique collection of artworks that provides an intervention in viewing art. It is a coming together of thousands of years of painting tradition with the Bhadohi art of weaving.
