The Painting
The artwork depicts the monsoon season where peacocks gather before the peahens on the river bank and dance to the melodious music of young Lord Krishna’s flute. The scene is taken from the common iconography of Lord Shrinathji in the Pichwai tradition. The Varsha season thus symbolizes the love and devotion of various beings of the forest for Lord Krishna. Here the artist, using the Pichwai tradition, has intermingled other traditional Rajasthani styles with his genre of painting. He has painted the peacocks and trees in more natural, softer strokes allowing the eyes to witness the movement of the dancing peacocks within the painting.
The Artform
Pichwai Art originated during the 17th century in the Nathdwara temple of Rajasthan, situated in the town within the Udaipur district. The art form is dedicated to adorning the shrine of Lord Shrinath at Nathdwara. The term """"Pichwai"""" finds its roots in the Sanskrit words """"pich"""" (meaning """"behind"""") and """"wai"""" (meaning """"hanging""""). It refers to the intricately designed cloth that serves as the backdrop for the revered idol of Shrinathji within the shrine. With a tradition spanning over four centuries, Pichwai art predominantly revolves around portraying the enchanting tales of Shrinathji, the divine child incarnation of Lord Krishna, and his diverse manifestations. The artistic representations vividly capture Shrinathji's iconography, often intertwined with other significant figures like Radha, Gopis, cows, lotuses, and peacocks. Through meticulous craftsmanship, this art form aims to convey a comprehensive portrayal of the divine image of Shrinathji, evoking a sense of holistic reverence.
The Artist
Born in 1963, Bhavani Shankar Sharma as a twelve-year-old, began learning the art of the Pichwai from his uncle Shree Reva Shankar and his father. He began his career as an artist in 1972 when as a school-going child, he sold his first work. After his retirement from a government job and brief distance from art, he decided to pick the brush again and venture back into the world of Pichwai where only a handful of artists have mastery. B.S. Sharma being one of them, renewed his life’s passion and now, has 35 years of experience in creating Pichwai paintings. His paintings are part of the collection of various prestigious auction houses and collectors.
