The Artform
Warli art originates from the tribal heartlands of Maharashtra where the members of the tribe would create intricate wall paintings using natural materials like rice paste, red ochre, and charcoal as part of their daily rituals and ceremonies. These paintings served as an artistic expression and a mode of communication, preserving the tribe's cultural heritage for generations. The distinctiveness of Warli lies in its simplicity and symbolism. Rendered primarily in white against a red ochre background, these paintings feature geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles, and squares, to depict human figures, animals, nature, and mythological tales. The art form's themes revolve around tribal life, communal harmony, and the interconnectedness of humans with nature, reflecting the Warli people's deep spiritual beliefs and reverence for their environment.
The Artist
Born in 1983, Anil Vangad is a contemporary Warli artist with an artistic lineage that stretches back to his mother, who instilled in him the time-honoured traditional techniques of Warli art. Hailing from Maharashtra, Anil Vangad paints images from the daily life of the Warli tribes which are flanked by the Sahyadri Mountain range. Inspired by the Warli cave paintings, he references festivities, the Tarpa dance, patterns fields to flocks of birds in the skies. He uses traditional material where canvas cloth is primed with cow dung and colors are prepared using rice paste mixed with neem which is then applied with a bamboo stick. Unlike his fellow Warli artists, he offers minimal compositions, a flat perspective, and incorporates modernity and technology, mostly as an indication of how life in his village is changing. With 17 years of experience, he has worked on vast mural projects. He has been part of group shows such as The Tribal Arts, Arushi Arts (2020), On Display Now, Arushi Arts (2020), Art to Invest In Uncertain Time: Part 1, Arushi Arts (2020), Of Aesthetics & The Vernacular: An Insight Into Warli Art, Arushi Arts (2020), Spirit Of India Chapter II, curated by Ina Puri, Harrington Street, Kolkata (2022), and has several solo exhibitions in Singapore, Hong Kong, the US, UK, France, South Korea, India, and many other countries. His work is held in several prestigious public and private collections as well as acquired by auction houses such as Roseberry’s London. He is currently working out of his studio located in the rural area to the North of Mumbai.
