The Painting

Deer are an often depicted subject in Gond painting due to the prevalence of the Hard Ground Barasingha in Madhya Pradesh. Master artist Mahesh Singh Shyam paints the stunning beauty of these creatures using the traditional Gond artform. The horns of the deer which are iconic to these creatures curl outward to from the branches of a tree of life.

The Artform

"The Gond art originating in Madhya Pradesh derives its name from the Dravidian word kond which means ‘green mountain’. Over the years the Gond artists have developed a bold visual vocabulary that uses naturally occurring pigment colors such as black, deep red, white, and ochre. The geometric patterns involving dots are used to create an intricate image of animals and the natural environment with an infusion of a distinct style of each practicing Gond artist. The history of the Gond tribe goes back 1400 years ago, with it comes a heritage of Gond Pradhans, who were musicians and storytellers within the tribe, and the primarily practiced Gond art which has transcended from being painted on mud walls to canvas and papers. It is also popular in regions like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. "

The Artist

Gond artist Mahesh Singh Shyam hails from Bhopal, where he carries forward a rich artistic legacy inspired by his uncle, the renowned Jangarh Singh. Mahesh grew up assisting his uncle, painting vibrant murals on village walls. This early exposure fostered a deep appreciation for traditional techniques and a lifelong dedication to preserving this unique art form. Today, Mahesh's art resonates globally. His works, sold through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India, have found homes in 12 countries.
