The Painting

This painting by Gond artist Mahesh Singh Shyam depicts a pair of majestic peacocks, their plumage forming with a kaleidoscope of colors contained within the dense swirls that are characteristic of this art form. The peacocks stand against a tree of life that seems to spread from the peacocks themselves. The background of the painting is left as a stark white which contrasts beautifully with the vibrant colors of the figures.

The Artform

"The Gond art originating in Madhya Pradesh derives its name from the Dravidian word kond which means ‘green mountain’. Over the years the Gond artists have developed a bold visual vocabulary that uses naturally occurring pigment colors such as black, deep red, white, and ochre. The geometric patterns involving dots are used to create an intricate image of animals and the natural environment with an infusion of a distinct style of each practicing Gond artist. The history of the Gond tribe goes back 1400 years ago, with it comes a heritage of Gond Pradhans, who were musicians and storytellers within the tribe, and the primarily practiced Gond art which has transcended from being painted on mud walls to canvas and papers. It is also popular in regions like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. "

The Artist

Gond artist Mahesh Singh Shyam hails from Bhopal, where he carries forward a rich artistic legacy inspired by his uncle, the renowned Jangarh Singh. Mahesh grew up assisting his uncle, painting vibrant murals on village walls. This early exposure fostered a deep appreciation for traditional techniques and a lifelong dedication to preserving this unique art form. Today, Mahesh's art resonates globally. His works, sold through the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India, have found homes in 12 countries.
