The Painting

This series of three artwork made by master artist Rajesh Maheshwari in the traditional Tikri style of Rajasthan depicts an opulent tree of life. The artist has used Persian geometric patterns, floral motifs, and peacocks to create the tree panels. This style of artwork is particularly found in Jaisalmer and Bikaner, where it has been used to embellish palaces, havelis (traditional Indian mansions), and temples for centuries. The artist has used meticulous craftsmanship where each mirror or glass piece is cut into various shapes and sizes before embedding them into the chosen surface using a special adhesive or mortar so as to create an enchanting floral motif.

The Art

"Tikri art refers to a traditional art form that involves creating intricate mirror mosaics. It is a decorative technique where small pieces of mirrors or glass are carefully arranged to create patterns, designs, and images on various surfaces such as walls, ceilings, furniture, and even textiles. The origins of Tikri art can be traced back to the state of Rajasthan in India, particularly in places like Jaisalmer and Bikaner, where it has been used to embellish palaces, havelis (traditional Indian mansions), and temples for centuries. The technique requires meticulous craftsmanship, as artisans cut mirrors or glass pieces into various shapes and sizes before embedding them into the chosen surface using a special adhesive or mortar. It is often characterized by its geometric patterns, floral motifs, and elaborate designs that create a sense of opulence and grandeur. It has been used to enhance the aesthetics of both interior and exterior spaces, adding a touch of sparkle and elegance to the architecture. Over time, Tikri art has evolved to incorporate modern designs and applications, making it a versatile decorative technique that continues to captivate and enchant. "

The Artist

Rajesh Maheshwari, a renowned Tikri artist from Rajasthan has been practicing this art for more than 20 years. Inspired by the Udaipur City Palace’s walls and doorways which feature exquisite Tikri artwork showcasing floral patterns and mythological creatures, Rajesh Maheshwari began his atelier. He and his artists painstakingly cut irregular-shaped pieces of colored glass and mirrors and embed them into a base, creating stunning visual textures. He uses popular elements, symbolizing prosperity, growth, and good luck. Elephants, peacocks, and parrots are frequently depicted, representing spiritual significance and cultural symbolism. His works have adorned palaces, and homes all over the world. Apart from making stand-alone art pieces, he had been extensively involved in building sets for prestigious films using the Tikri technique. His studio is based in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
