The Painting

This intricate Pattachitra artwork, hand-painted by Gitanjali Das, depicts Dakhinkali which is a popular form of Kaali in eastern India. In Odiya, Dakhin means South and more specifically the direction. As per Hindu belief, Yama the lord of death rules in the south direction. But according to several myths, as soon as he hears the name Kali, he flees in fear. Therefore several Sakta temples were erected in Orissa where she is popularly revered. She is also believed to be the guardian of Lord Jagganath’s temple. Here the artist has portrayed her in her yagna pose with multiple hands holding weapons, lotuses, etc. Dakshinakali's two right hands are depicted in gestures of blessing and giving of boons. She is painted within a temple arch decorated with various images of goddess Kali and goddess Durga. The artist has drawn her in traditional iconography which shows her presence during the night. The artist has used the traditional Pattachitra style of painting by using naturally occurring pigments on cotton cloth.

The Art

Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum, and chalk.

The Artist

Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das began learning the art form of Pattachitra at the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learned the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband, Shri Pranab Das, who was also a fellow Pattachitra master.
