The Painting

This intricate Pattachitra artwork, hand painted by Gitanjali Das, depicts Yagna Mata which is another name for Mata Sita. Here the artist has portrayed Yagna Mata’s unwavering devotion and chastity in an austere manner. The artist has painted her in white in contrast to the red burning pyre in the background. Gitanjali Das has referenced Ramcharitmanas where after undergoing numerous trials to prove her purity, Sita was finally freed from skeptical scrutiny following the grand Ashwamedha Yagna. According to the tale when questioned, she invoked Agnee Dev in the form of yagna (fire) to vouch for her chastity. In a powerful moment depicted in this painting, she voluntarily sits on the Yagna fire, reaffirming her divinity and reminding all creatures of her true nature. She is portrayed as embodying the forms of Goddesses, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Durga. She uses several Vaishnava motifs on the temple enclosures with various divine roops (forms) of Gods and Goddesses on the temple arch. The artist has used traditional Pattachitra style of painting by using naturally occurring pigments on cotton cloth.

The Art

Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum and chalk.

The Artist

Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das had begun learning the art form of Pattachitra since the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learnt the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband who was also a fellow Pattachitra artist.
