The Painting

This intricate Phad painting is hand-painted by Lokesh Joshi. The tableau depicts scenes from Ganesh Chalisa. Here he has depicted Lord Ganesha on his Vahana in the center surrounded by his female devotees who are fanning him. At the top of the painting, he has shown Surya (sun) and Chandra (moon) which are considered to be auspicious motifs. Lokesh Joshi gave the ‘burnt’ effect to the borders of the artwork to create texture. He used natural stone colors on paper to portray the characters but for the inscriptions, he used gold pigment which isn’t common in the Phad tradition of painting. The palette consists of bright colors and bold lines and all the figures are shown having exaggerated features.

The Art

Phad painting is a traditional style of religious scroll painting, which is native to the state of Rajasthan. The word phad means “fold” in the local Rajasthani language, and thus refers to scroll paintings made on cloth, typically cotton or silk, which are then folded and unfolded during the performances of accompanying folk songs and stories. The paintings depict the tales of the local deities and heroes, particularly of Pabuji or Devnarayan who are worshiped by the Rabari tribe in Rajasthan. The Bhopas, the priest-singers within the tribe, carry the painted Phads along with them as mobile temples. They are usually done in bright colors with bold lines and exaggerated features and are about 20-30 feet in length and about 5 feet wide. The artists known as phad painters come from the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan and have a long history, with some scrolls dating back to the 17th century.

The Artist

Born in 1983, Lokesh Joshi is a renowned Phad artist with over 25 years of experience. He was highly inspired by his parents Kanhaiya Lal Joshi and Parvathy Devi Joshi and began practising the art form at the tender age of 10 years. He has been exhibited in several exhibitions and has conducted several workshops such as at ‘Mewar University’, and ‘Banasthali Vidyapith’, in Rajasthan, and Mumbai.
