The Painting

This intricate artwork shows Radha-Krishna as the central figures standing under the auspicious Kadam tree (bur-flower tree) with Lord Krishna playing his flute while Radha, mesmerized by the music, lovingly adorns her arms around him. The artist has created an image of cosmic love, which enchants its viewers and urges them to transcend along with the divine unification of Radha-Krishna. She infuses the imagery of parrots, whose iconography has symbolized as messenger of love between Lord Vishnu and his devotees, along with Lord Krishna’s bellowed cows at the bottom of the painting, as they gathered around the divine couple, mesmerized by the beautiful scene. She has naturally occurring colors on cotton cloth, imbibing the traditional style of Pattachitra paintings.

The Art

Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum and chalk.

The Artist

Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das had begun learning the art form of Pattachitra since the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learnt the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband who was also a fellow Pattachitra artist.
