The Painting

This stunning Vintage Pichwai depicts the auspicious festival of Daan Lila on a green-dyed cotton cloth. Lord Krishna is shown demanding milk and butter from the Gopis as a toll for safe passage home. The festival has its origins in bhakti poetry. It is believed that this occurred in a valley in Mount Govardhana known as Daan Ghati, and while some Pichwai depict the entire narrative and enactment of the Gopis sharing their milk with Krishna, others only suggest the event with Shrinathji being approached by Gopis bearing milk pots on their heads. The artist has painted a mango tree behind the central figure with parrots and various other birds flocking on it and an illuminated sun in the center. The painting has a delicate border filled with floral motifs and in the foreground, two cowherds and cows are shown reverently looking at the image of their idol. He has used natural stone colors on cotton cloth to create a vibrant Dakni style Pichwai which are often illuminated with the use of gold and silver foil.

The Art

"Pichwai Art originated during the 17th century in the Nathdwara temple of Rajasthan, situated in the town within the Udaipur district. The art form is dedicated to adorning the shrine of Lord Shrinath at Nathdwara. The term ""Pichwai"" finds its roots in the Sanskrit words ""pich"" (meaning ""behind"") and ""wai"" (meaning ""hanging""). It refers to the intricately designed cloth that serves as the backdrop for the revered idol of Shrinathji within the shrine. With a tradition spanning over four centuries, Pichwai art predominantly revolves around portraying the enchanting tales of Shrinathji, the divine child incarnation of Lord Krishna, and his diverse manifestations. The artistic representations vividly capture Shrinathji's iconography, often intertwined with other significant figures like Radha, Gopis, cows, lotuses, and peacocks. Through meticulous craftsmanship, this art form aims to convey a comprehensive portrayal of the divine image of Shrinathji, evoking a sense of holistic reverence. "
