The Painting

This vibrant thangka painting by Dipesh Shreshtha showcases the union of masculine and feminine energies in Buddhism. The Gods Vajradhara with Shakti are seen entwined in an embrace seated on a lotus throne. The contrast of colors as well as the poses of each God shows the duality present in all creation and how unification can be achieved through the acceptance of both halves.

The Artform

A Thangka is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting which is made on cotton or silk applique using intricate application of colors derived from organic and mineral pigments. The paintings served as a visual depiction of scenes from Buddhist cosmology where vivid tableaus showing deities and mandalas are painted. The process of creating a Thangka is a sacred endeavour, involving precise measurements, ritualistic preparation, and the patient application of mineral-based pigments. Masters of this art form, known as Thangka painters, pass down their knowledge through generations, preserving a rich cultural heritage. The fusion of artistic expression and religious devotion in Thangka painting encapsulates a spiritual journey, inviting both artist and viewer into a world of transcendence and inner peace.

The Artist

Dipesh Shrestha is a third-generation, traditional Thangka painter hailing from the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. With expertise in mandala art and Thangka art, Shrestha has 20 years of experience where his works were displayed in various exhibitions. Originally from Tibet, Dipesh Shrestha comes from a family of Thangka artists and learned the art of Thangka at a young age. He has been spreading the cultural and spiritual significance of the art to a wider audience. His studio is currently based in Thamel, Kathmandu.
