The Painting
While nature is symbolic of so many things in our lives, in the lives of the indigenous fauna, trees offer the powerful act of shelter and safety. In this artwork hand-painted by Lado Bai we see the figures of several birds are rendered using intricate layers of dots taking shelter in the shady foliage of a tree. The dots form swirling patterns of vivid color that bring the composition to life. The theme of the harmonious interaction between the parts of the environment is of central importance to the art form as a whole and reflects the ethos of the Bhil community.
The Artform
Bhil art, a captivating tribal art form from central India, boasts a rich history deeply connected to the Bhil people's way of life. Traditionally adorning mud walls and shrines, these paintings expressed their beliefs and connection to nature through a simple style. Bold outlines, flat perspectives, and a limited palette of natural colors depict animals, symbolic of the natural world, and scenes from daily life or mythology. The use of dots, in vibrant colors distinct from Gond art, adds texture and depth to these narratives, offering a glimpse into Bhil traditions and customs. In recent times, Bhil art has expanded beyond walls, finding expression on cloth, paper, and other surfaces, captivating a wider audience and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Bhil people.
The Artist
"Lado Bai was born in the 1950s in Jhabua District, Madhya Pradesh, in central India. Like Jangarh Singh Shyam, she was discovered by Jagdish Swaminathan during his travels searching for artists in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh. Her paintings celebrate the flora and fauna in a melee of brightly colored motifs, each a manifestation of primal energy. The human beings in her works appear entranced as they participate in a cosmic dance. The figures on the canvas are like the characters in an opera or reciting an ode to nature. She has been part of several group exhibitions such as ‘Creative Customs: International Folk Art’, Peninsula School of Art, USA (2016); ‘water+wisdom Australia-India’, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, and in solo shows such as ‘Merging Narratives, Ojas Art Gallery, Delhi (2022). Her works are part of several prestigious art collections such as The Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts, Saffronart in Mumbai, the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in New Delhi, and the Sutra Gallery in Wisconsin, USA. In 2017 she received the Master Ojas Art Award at the Jaipur Literature Festival, solidifying her position as a leading figure in the Bhil art movement. The Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts, Saffronart in Mumbai, the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in New Delhi, and the Sutra Gallery in Wisconsin, USA. She is currently based in Bhopal."
