The Painting

This intricate artwork depicts Lord Krishna performing Raas-Leela in a traditional Pattachitra style of painting. The painting is divided into six frames with each frame showcasing scenes from Lord Krishna’s life. The first frame depicts him at the Yamuna bank as he takes bath and teases his Sakis (female friends). The second frame shows a night scene in which he is in an amorous pose with his beloved Radha, which imbibes a mood for love amongst other fellow residents of Vrindavan. In the third frame he is shown meeting Radha at night while other Sakis of his keep a lookout for intruders. In the fourth scene he is once again having a clandestine meeting with Radha at the Yamuna Bank while the other Gopis are shown taking a bath. The fifth frame depicts his cosmic union with his beloved Radha, which is blessed under the auspicious Yagna. And in the sixth and the final frame, the artist has shown a beautiful Raas-Leela scene where Radha-Krishna are shown embracing with Sakis surrounding them as they get entrenched by the beauty of the moment. According to Pattachitra style of painting, the artist has created a vivid imagery with a deep, opaque color palette which distinguishes it from other imagery of Lord Krishna. She has used naturally occurring pigments on cotton cloth.

The Art

Pattachitra Painting is a thousand-year-old artform, derived from two words patta which means “cloth” and chitra which means “picture”. It is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting of Odisha originating from a small village called Raghurajpur near Puri. The works are mostly based on Hindu deities, especially the iconography from Jagannath and Vaishnava sect. Pattachitra artists create a tableau of rich, potent motifs using naturally occurring colors, gum and chalk.

The Artist

Born in 1987 in the village of Dandasahi, near the famous Pattachitra Crafts Village, Geetanjali Das had begun learning the art form of Pattachitra since the age of ten from her Guru Late Shri Arjun Mohrana who was a National Award-winning artist. She worked with him for ten years where she learnt the form and technique and how to prepare traditional colors used in Pattachitra. Her work mainly focuses on Hindu religious themes which she paints on Tussar Silk and hand-made canvas. She has participated in several art exhibitions in and around Orissa with her late husband who was also a fellow Pattachitra artist.
